Handling Claims for Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
Are you age 65 or older and have extremely limited income that does not meet your needs? Or, are you blind or disabled (at any age) and in a similar financial situation? If so, there is a chance that you qualify to receive benefits through Supplemental Security Income (SSI), which is also commonly known as Social Security. SSI is a federal program that provides monthly financial benefits to individuals in these categories who have little or no income, as well as very few resources. SSI benefits are available for both adults and children. Unfortunately, however, many individuals who should qualify for this type of payment end up having their SSI claims unfairly denied. When this happens, it is best to have a strong legal professional representing you.
At Frank Walker Law, we have a competent Pittsburgh Social Security lawyer who can provide you with step-by-step assistance for claiming SSI benefits and contesting any denials. We understand that without the appropriate level of financial support, the quality of life of you and your family can be negatively impacted in a major way. Take action by working with our law office and getting the help you need! According to data from the U.S. Social Security Administration, a total of 367,586 individuals received Social Security benefits in 2011, with 35,806 of those recipients being from Allegheny County.
Who qualifies for Social Security?
Those who qualify for SSI benefits include low-income individuals who are age 65 and older and low-income individuals of all ages who are blind or disabled. If you qualify, you can start receiving payment each month from both the federal government and the state of Pennsylvania, with the payment amounts depending on the person's financial circumstances. In order to qualify, the claimant's property that he or she owns must value less than $2,000 if the person is single, according to the U.S. Social Security Administration's website. Married individuals, on the other hand, must have property that values less than $3,000. If the person applying for benefits lives in his or her home, the value of that home will not count toward this amount. It is also possible the value of a vehicle and certain other property will not be counted as well.
The claimant's living situation will make a difference in the amount in benefits he or she receives. For example, there are different benefit amounts for those who live independently, those who live in someone else's house and those who live in facility that provides special care. It is possible for both U.S. citizens and certain legal residents to receive SSI benefits. It is important to note that if you are approved for SSI benefits, you will usually gain access to other types of government aid, such as medical care and food stamps.
Challenging SSI Benefit Claim Denials
There are many reasons you might be denied for a claim for SSI benefits. For example, the U.S. Social Security Administration might have determined that you did not have a disability that qualifies for benefits. Or, an error might have been made in the processing of your claim. A knowledgeable SSI attorney can help you gather and present documents that prove your eligibility—whether those documents have to do with you disability or your financial circumstances—so you can most effectively appeal the denial of your claim.
