A former clerk in the Pittsburgh police department's personnel and finance office has filed retirement papers, a year after being forced into paid leave. The woman, who was one originally hired to the force in 1977, is one of four police employees who were placed on an indefinite paid leave last year as a result of a probe into the department's finances.
Three of the workers placed on leave – the woman, her daughter who is a police officer with the department, and a civilian employee – were placed on leave in February 2013 by Acting Chief Regina McDonald. The move was in response to an FBI investigation into the administration of the city of Pittsburgh, including the police department.
The paid leaves were apparently related to payments the city made to the retiree's daughter, who was part of at least two companies which received payments from the city in 2011 and 2012. The total of one such payment was reported to be at least $7,000. A co-owner of the other company has already pleaded guilty to diverting over $70,600 of police funds to two accounts with the police credit union. He also admitted to purchasing alcohol, gift cars, and other items with about $32,000 of the money.
Despite the apparent guilt-by-association, the retiree has never been charged with a crime. She says she is looking forward to a nice quiet life.
