A professor with the University of Pittsburgh, who is charged of using grant money to purchase drugs, waived his right to a preliminary hearing on Wednesday.
The 52 year-old accused is a professor in the pharmacy school at the University of Pittsburgh. He is charged with 18 felony drug counts, including obtaining controlled substances through misrepresentation. The charges say that his diversion of drugs for illicit purposes goes back to 2011. The professor's illicit drug use was discovered after university police contacted the department's chairman in summer 2013 due to suspicious narcotics purchases.
Though the actual narcotic was not identified, published reports say that the man was injecting pain killers and anti-anxiety medications. Unauthorized quantities of the drug were found in his office when officials conducted a search. When he was confronted about the drugs, he allegedly admitted to the accusations, saying that he has an addiction and is seeking help in rehab.
The accused has been placed on leave from his position at the university, and is awaiting trial.
