A Brooklyn man was in Pittsburgh court on Thursday, accused of raping two different women in separate incidents in the city more than 20 years ago. The incidences, which occurred in January and November 1992, came to light as a result of DNA evidence.
The 61 year old accused man was identified by police in connection with the 1992 rape cases after his DNA was found to be a match to a profile in the Combined DNA Indexing System (CODIS). The accused had reportedly submitted his DNA to authorities in relation to an unconnected incident. Authorities uploaded his DNA profile to the CODIS system, where it was later found.
The man is currently being held on charges relating to the 1992 incidents, including rape and burglary. His bail has been set at $800,000, which had been raised by Lawrenceville District Judge from an earlier bail of $400,000.
The man's attorney has stated that he believes the case will hang on whether or not a new court ordered DNA test matches the 1992 samples. No trial date has been announced.
